Muskox


Colour - dark brown to blackish body; yellowish brown saddle and 'stockings'

Length - 2.0 to 2.3 m; shoulder height 1.2 to 1.35 m

Shape - stocky body; short limbs; a stubby tail; humped shoulders; sturdy legs; broad cloven (divided) hoofs; horns curving down close to sides of head then out and up near pointed tips

Behaviour - gregarious animal; are browsers and grazers feeding on crowberries, cowberries, ground birch and willows in winter; sedge, rushes, and blue grass in the summer

Distribution - usually found in herds ranging from three to one hundred; bulls wander alone or in small groups for most of the year, but join the herds of cows during rutting season; seasonal migrations rarely exceed 80 km. from summer to winter feeding grounds

Sensitivity - scientific evidence about reaction to vessels and aircrafts is lacking
