Point Ellice House

Point Ellice House Collection

About the historic site
Point Ellice House served as the residence of the O'Reilly family for over one hundred years. Judge Peter O'Reilly was an influential member of Victoria's elite during the Victorian era. When this family home was acquired by the Province of British Columbia in 1975, the contents were intact as they had been before the turn of the century. Today the historic site is open to the public and gives visitors a glimpse of life in early Victoria, British Columbia. For visitor information, visit the BC Heritage Branch web site at www.heritage.gov.bc.ca

About the Collection
The collection of household items at Point Ellice House is one of the most complete in British Columbia from the Victorian era. The rooms of the house are filled with items originally owned by the O'Reilly family, and many more items are in storage. The collection consists of items like china, paintings, books, and furniture from the 19th century. Only a portion of the artifact records available are currently digitized and searchable on-line.

About the web site and on-line collection
The Point Ellice House Collection of Household Victoriana web site allows the on-line visitor to tour the house and learn about the O'Reilly family. The virtual tour leads the visitor from room to room, and each page contains photographs and descriptions therein. The gossip section contains biographies and archival photographs of the O'Reilly family. The collection database is searchable on-line, and contains 4,600 artifacts records with a total of 800 digital pictures.
