I
am a self-taught Cree artist from the Mathias Colomb First Nation, Pukatawagan,
Manitoba. I have been creating art since I was seven years old.
I
specialize in beadwork. Art is important to me. It's part of me and
it's who I am. My art is based on nature. Art is a guidance to discover
the inner being of who I am.
It
was an honour for me to have my work presented to Chief Whitebird during
the Treaty Land Entitlement signing in May, 1987. In 1984, an art gathering
was held in Elkhorn, Manitoba where my work was displayed. My work had
has been sold throughout Northern Manitoba, British Columbia and in
Winnipeg, Manitoba.
I
am also a traditional dancer.

Freedom
Spirit '97
A
bald eagle soars on, unencumbered by the physical world embracing
the freedom at hand, with mountains far below. Consisting entirely
of beads, two hundred eighty five across arranged into two hundred
fifty-five rows. In this magnificent tribute to the eagle, it
symbolizes leadership, and the mountains' faith. This grand creation
took Mary two straight months, with working up to eight hours
everyday.

Guardian
Spirit '95
This
piece was made using a wooden frame with mounted glass. This grand
piece depicts an Eagle sitting on a perch guarding his domain.
Eagles are not nocturnal creatures so this creature must be from
the spirit world. With the moon shining full and bright is meant
to articulate a grandmother's spirit taking care to light the
path. After getting the inspiration for this particular motif
Mary worked for one whole month straight. Sometimes well over
ten hours a day.

Universal
Leading Eagle'96
This
massive creation is one of Mary's largest works today. After five
months of twelve to sixteen hours a day, she was finally rewarded
with this masterpiece. The reoccurring moon theme in her work
is her acknowledgment of the respect she has for the full moon
ceremony.

Mating
Time '95
A
very spiritual piece of decorative art. The fact that the eagle
has only one mate in a lifetime is represented by two separate
works. Identical blue colors indicate water, a symbol of purity.
An impressive display of the artists connection to the spiritual
aspects of everyday life.
