Roger Crait
"The only time I realized how much work I had done was when I realized how much more work I had to do"

Roger Crait is from Cross Lake Manitoba, he has lived in Winnipeg all his life. As long as he can remember he has been drawn to the arts.

It wasn't until high school when he was in grade 10, that his art teacher perceived him to be a 'trouble maker' and told him never to return. Roger recalls "I felt bannished for life". This moment became a transformation period for Roger. The following years, he re-registered in the art class and excelled in those years by winning the Fort Richmond High School art award consecutively untill his graduation in 1995.

Upon his graduation he enrolled at the University of Manitoba Fine Arts Program. He is extremely grateful to have learned more of his Native roots from Roger Armitte, the elder in residence at the Native Student Centre.

By learning more about his Native culture, Roger is able to express himself through the medium of art. It is through incorporating traditional and contemporary techniques that he is able to inform the general public that Native art is continually evolving.

One of his accomplishments was when he organized a solo exhibition titled 'Red Dwarf' in February 1998. In a warehouse in Winnipeg, he showcased 1126 pieces of his art work to the general public.

It is his ambition to have a career as an artist and to share what traditional teachings, he has learned.

Self-portrait

It is always interesting to see what an artist sees in him or herself.

This drawing is done in charcoal. Roger worked mainly through photographs and transferred the image to paper. He would then draw the outline onto the paper and finish it off by shading in the rest. He used conte in the whites of the eyes. This drawing is part of a gift for a friend.

The Actual size of the image is 40 inches (100 cm) in height.

Indian Red

This was done with oil on canvas, the canvas was stretched over the frame and the excess canvas was dipped in paint and moved near the edges to harden while drying.

This painting makes a joke about a crayon Roger had seen when he was young. "It made me wonder why there was no colour called European pink or Oriental yellow." It is using the Native as an icon for the whole nation.

Eskimo Scenery

This was done with charcoal and latex on canvas. It addresses humour towards Native culture and is intended to mock traditional art, but at the same time build a foundation for contemporary artists. Diversity of style is very important for me and this was also an attempt at a different kind of style.
