Raymond Chartrand

"I see there is more awareness of Native culture today-our future looks good."

Raymond Chartrand is from Duck Bay, Metis settlement. He has lived in Winnipeg since he was a youth.

His style of art is wild game hide sculpting, it first started as a hobby, but it's been slowly turning into a way of life for Raymond. Wild game hide sculpting is a process where the hide (moose, deer, elk) is wetted down, then stretched, and while it is drying it can be molded it whatever form the artist wishes. When the hide is dry, the artist is able to start to paint his vision.

In his experience, he feels it is important for Aboriginals to adapt to an ever changing environment. In his youth, he used to trap, and when the trapping was unable to support a way of life, Raymond was embodied with a sense of understanding how life can change.

Raymond draws upon the clan system, cultural teachings, and the people in his community for inspiration. It is his intention to promote the importance of family through his art.

A Marriage Of The Clans

The hide presented itself to become a symbol of family. From his perspective, the Aboriginal people need to bond as a community, this starting with the family.

Buffalo Shield

This was inspired by the four colours of humanity: yellow, white, red, and black. In a prophecy, it is said that all of humanity will become unified into one colour.

Spirit Skull

A friend had given Raymond a deer skull. He was inspired by how an animal can give so much in providing food and clothing, and he embarked on a journey to express respect to the spirit of the deer. It is important for Raymond to share his knowledge to the people he meets in his neighborhood.

Warrior Head

This image of an Indian warrior is approximately 22 inches in length. This piece is made using a variety of molding techniques that allow for the artist to develop real life impression.

The impression technique allows for the artist to first mold the work and later refine each piece. Countless hours are spent reworking the impression to meet the demands of the Artist.

The Warrior holds a medicine bag around his neck. Made out of leather, beadwork, fur and horse hair, this is attention to detail is a testament to Raymond Chartrand's work.
