L o n g m a n b. 1964, Fort Qu'appelle,
Saskatchewan Mary Longman's educational history covers the most cutting-edge institutions in Canada: Emily Carr College of Art and Design (1990-95), Concordia University (1990-91), and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where she graduated with an M.F.A. in 1993. Currently a doctoral candidate at the University of British Columbia, Longman has worked as an archaeologist and art instructor. Her two- and three-dimensional work uses abstract traditional aboriginal icons to explore various grave and pressing issues such as suicide, adoption, the AIDS crisis, and land claims. She is the recipient of several awards, including the Mungo Martin Award (1989), a Canada Council Award, and a Canadian Native Arts Foundation Award (1992).
