Anna being rescued from burning museum
On July 13, 1865, a fire destroyed The American Museum. Anna’s venue was on the third floor where she was trapped. She could not get through the door, and even if she could, they did not think the stairs would support her. The New York Tribune reported this fire and Anna’s rescue from it.

Although Anna lost her savings of $1200 in gold in the fire, she was fortunate to escape with her life. The museum was destroyed, and it was insured for $40,000, much less than the estimated value of close to half a million dollars. Despite this great loss, Barnum still planed to rebuild his museum.
