The Heritage Canada's national network of Heritage Regions included the region known as the Baccalieu Trail Heritage Region. "Baccalieu" is the way the French pronounced the Portuguese word "Baccalao" which stands for "Cod-fish". This word was later adopted by Newfoundlanders.

The Baccalieu Trail Heritage Region is situated on the Bay de Verde Peninsula located on the Avalon Penisula, in Newfoundland. The region includes all of those communities in Conception Bay North, starting at Georgetown, extending to Bay de Verde and Trinity Bay, south to Blaketown, including Whitbourne and Markland.
