The historic Baccalieu Trail begins at the junctions of Highway #70 and the Trans Canada, and continues on a 200km loop around the Bay de Verde Peninsula back to the Trans Canada at Whitbourne. The region boasts a rich, colourful heritage, from the very oldest communities in Newfoundland to dramatic vistas and coastlines to Baccalieu Island, a world-class bird colony.

The first leg of the Trail encompasses numerous old towns and outports, many dating from the early 1600's. A monument in Cupids commemorates the founding of Newfoundlander's first official English colony in 1610 by John Guy.

During the 17th, 18th and early 19th Centuries, the numerous bays along Conception Bay North were filled with fishing vessels and crews from several European countries, as is evidenced by the French, English, Portuguese, and Spanish placenames along the way. Gradually, over this period English and Irish settlers or "planters" occupied virtually every inhabitable stretch of coastline.
