Fred Cattroll was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on March 11, 1956 to Cree parents originally from Nelson House, Manitoba.

At the age of 17, Cattroll produced a half hour film on life in James Bay with an Opportunities of a Youth Grant. He attended Carleton University’s School of Journalism and discovered he was more interested in Photography. From Carleton University, Cattroll enrolled in Toronto’s Ryerson Polytechnical Institute where he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Still Photography. Cattroll says of his Ryerson days, "When I started to take pictures, that’s when I felt normal...Ryerson is what made me fit in. It was my family in a way."

After Ryerson, Cattroll returned to Ottawa and while driving he spotted a car on fire. He immediately stopped and began to photograph the incident. While taking the pictures, a fireman asked him what newspaper he was with; he said the Ottawa Citizen. Cattroll took the pictures to the Citizen and they offered him a freelancing job. From there he began to freelance for Macleans, Canadian Business, Parks Canada and the National Film Board.

Through the years, Cattroll has earned himself an enormous reputation. Today, some of Cattroll’s clients are the Assembly of First Nations, the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, National Arts Centre of Canada, National Ballet of Canada, CBC Newsworld, Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, Health Canada, National Defense and numerous arts organizations. Cattroll also served as the President of The Canadian Association of Photographers and Illustrators in Communication and is presently on the board of advisors at Algonquin College in Ottawa.

When asked what advice would he give to young people, Fred replies, "Its education, believing in yourself and staying in good shape, taking care of your body mind and spirit. Also, pay yourself first, be good to yourself." Cattroll contributes his success to the craft of lighting. He says, "You don’t have to have a lot of cameras. Some of my best pictures are taken with light from the Creator - light from the Creator and a little bit of flash thrown in by Fred."
