In 1957, Canadair was subcontracted to build Canadian Convairs with Eland engines. Christened the "Cosmopolitan" by the RCAF, it functioned as cargo/passenger plane. Referred to as the "540" passenger plane by civilians, the CL-66 was certified by the FAA as the first turboprop airliner in 1959.
Poor performance of the Eland engines and an asking price of $1.4 million US made the 540 less desirable to airline operators than cheaper competitors planes, response was less than enthusiastic.
In the mid-1990s there were still some Cosmopolitans still in service, equipped with Allison engines.
