The go ahead to build the 35 passenger Dash 8 came in September 1980. Intended to be a versatile multipurpose regional transport plane, it was designed for optimal regional operations, but adaptable for use on unpaved runways, or as a business class flight, or military craft.
After a difficult development, built in the shadow of a changing economy, the Dash 8 had an enthusiastic reception. The first DHC-8 was delivered to the Ontario government's regional airline, Norontair in 1983.
