In 1986 Canadair looked into the potential market for a regional jetliner and in 1989 began the Regional Jet program.

Marketed in conjuction with the de Havilland Dash 8, it was the company's first attempt to break into this market. Designed as a 50-seat transport, it was considered an "instant market success." The company received orders from all over the world.

The first plane was delivered in 1992, and over the years has been offered with newer features including a longer range, larger payload and improved flight navigation systems.
