Causeway before its Completion

Seen here is some of the 10,092,000 tons of rock used to fill in the Strait of Canso for the eventual construction of the mile-long Canso Causeway.  In the three years of construction on the span, construction was done in phases with the heavy armour rock first dumped in the shallow strait, then lighter gravel, upon which the rail and road beds were lain.
