B.C. Knowledge Network established.

1981
CBC introduces closed-captioning on Canadian TV.

1983
Opening of the first pay TV channels.

1984
First pay TV specialty channels open.

1985
CBC and others join TV5, a European French-language satellite service.

1986
CBC's 50th anniversary.

1987
The CRTC licences 10 new TV stations -- 4 English channels, 5 French and one pay TV channel. The CRTC also authorizes distribution of The Sports Network (TSN) and MuchMusic on basic cable.

1988
Cabinet approves CBC license to operate an English all-news channel.

July 31: The CBC all-news channel, CBC Newsworld, is launched.
