François-Joseph Brassard



FRANÇOIS-JOSEPH BRASSARD (1908-1976) was a composer, ethnomusicologist, organist, critic, teacher, and pianist. He studied piano at the Chicoutimi Seminary with Father H. Fortin, then with Rolland-G. Gingras. He also studied at the Académie de musique de Québec, in Montreal with Léo-Pol Morin and Claude Champagne, in Paris, and at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He was organist at the Church of St. Dominique in Jonquière from 1930-1970, and taught at Université Laval from 1941. He collected and researched over 1200 French-Canadian folksongs from across North America and was a member of the Université Laval's Archives de folklore.
