JEAN-CHRYSOSTOME BRAUNEIS (1814-1871), son of a German immigrant musician, was possibly the first Canadian professional musician to obtain musical training in Europe. When he returned to Montreal in 1833 to teach various instruments, voice, and theory, he introduced to Montreal the études of Clementi, Cramer, and Czerny. He was organist at Notre-Dame Church and St. James Cathedral in Montreal. In 1837 he founded the short-lived Société de Musique.
