The use of the phrase "CANADIAN LADY" indicates that women in Quebec during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were expected to be accomplished musicians within the home, but were discouraged from obtaining public recognition for their abilities and consequently often used pseudonyms for publication. It has been suggested that this particular "lady" might be Josephte Desbarats Sheppard who had Château d'eau: Municipal Polka published in New York in 1856.
