The bandmaster and composer ARTHUR A. CLAPPÉ (1850-1920) emigrated from Ireland to become the director of the Governor General's Foot Guards Band in Ottawa (1877-84) before settling in the USA as bandmaster and educator. His piece Canada's Welcome: A Masque, was one of the largest scores (102 pages) published in Canada at that time.
