CHARLES A. E. HARRISS (1862-1929), a prolific composer, emigrated to Canada in 1882. He was active as conductor and organist/choirmaster, and in 1903 organized the Cycle of Musical Festivals, held in fifteen Canadian cities coast-to-coast. He was the first director of the McGill Conservatorium in Montreal and was active in music in many Canadian cities, particularly Montreal, Ottawa and Victoria. He published over 50 songs, anthems and keyboard works, as well as orchestral pieces, a cantata Daniel Before the King and the operas The Admiral and Torquil.
