HENRY SCHALLEHN (1815-1891) was a violinist, clarinetist, bandmaster, and teacher. He was a German musician active in Toronto in the middle of the 19th century. Schallehn may be the Henry Schallehn who directed the English music groups the17th Lancers Band (1845-57), the Crystal Palace Band (1854), and the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall (1857-9). He appeared in Toronto and Hamilton, particularly with the Toronto Philharmonic Society, as conductor, concertmaster, piano accompanist, and violin and clarinet soloist. In 1850 he taught singing at Upper Canada College.
