GEORGE W. STRATHY (1818-1890) presumably came to Canada with his parents from Scotland in 1835. At some point he studied in Germany, later claiming to be a student of Mendelssohn. By 1847 he had settled in Toronto where he taught piano, organ, and theory, conducted various ensembles, and frequently was pianist in works such as Beethoven's Archduke Trio. Strathy was the first Canadian (also in North America) to hold the academic title, "Professor of Music," (appointed to the University of Trinity College in 1853) and the first known to have received a Doctor of Music degree (from Trinity College in 1858).
