The Americans
The Americans were the first white settlers to come to Megantic County in 1804. They mostly settled in the western part of the Eastern Townships. By 1807, there was an estimated population of 15,000 Americans in the Eastern Townships. By contrast, Megantic County had received only 3 families, and only 6 or so families had arrived by 1812. Although some called themselves "late loyalists", by strict definition they were not United Empire Loyalists who had fled America immediately after the war. Some such as Capitaine Amos Hall and Aaron Kimball of Ireland Township, had fought on the American side during the War of Independence from Britain. Indeed, Capitaine Amos Hall is thought to have been Pay Master and for a time Guardsman of General Washington.
