This hill is situated on le Rang 8-9 of Inverness. Around 1840, there was a school at the foot of Canning Hill. It was in use until 1930.
Situated on le Rang 8-9, Reedsdale was named after the Doctor Reed who lived there until the end of the 19th century. Dr. Reed was mayor of Inverness for a period of 23 years between 1868 and 1895. As a doctor, he was serving the population of Inverness as well as the surrounding counties, and would charge $3.00 per year per family using his services. As a citizen, he was a man of great influence and wealth, having made a fortune investing in the copper mines.
In 1892 the population reached 60 people in Reedsdale. They had their own post office, doctor and the mills were nearby at Kinnearville.
Kinnearville is situated on a small road named Kinnear Road, between Dublin and le Rang 8-9. The Kinnear family owned some mills there. As early as 1831, Samuel Robinson opened a carding mill. This man was also a cartwright, repairing and building chariots and cars. In 1892, John Lambie Kinnear built 3 mills in Kinnearville, one sawmill, one carding mill and a flour mill. The mills no longer exist, but the road is still known by the name of their owner.
