Rectory Hill
Rev. H.A. Dickson
Rev. H.A. Dickson
This hill, situated on the west side of le Rang 10-11, was named Rectory Hill because of the presence of the rectory near St. Stephen's Anglican Church. The hill represents the first escarpment towards the Appalachians Mountains when leaving the plains of the St. Lawrence Valley.

Many farmers and families lived surrounding the church and the cemetery on Rectory Hill. They included a blacksmith in 1831 and a shoe-maker in 1861.

The first St. Stephen's Church was built in 1852 in the middle of the cemetery at the foot of the hill. It burned on the 8th of December 1902 and was rebuilt in 1904 on the other side of the road opposite the rectory.

The rectory was built in 1871. The first minister to live there was Rev. C.B. Washer, from 1871 to 1876. Then came Reverend Peter Roe, from 1877 to 1895, and finally Rev. H. A. Dickson from 1895 until his death in 1915. Reverend Dickson was also the editor of The Gazette Megantic Edition (1899-1911) and founded the first telephone company in Megantic County in 1910. The Dickson family kept the old presbytery until 1975. It is now a privately owned building. The church, deconsecrated in 1980, is now owned by Rectory Hill Company who uses it as a cultural centre and a concert hall during the summer season.
