Discuss these safety tips with your child to make the experience of being home alone a positive one.
House Rules

Establish rules similar to ones in the Child Safety Checklist. Involve your child in making these rules. More than one child? Work out a system where sibling disputes can be avoided.

Emergencies / Utility Problems / Fire

Prepare your child to handle all kinds of emergencies and problems. Review fire procedures, escape routes and emergency telephone numbers (911, ambulance, etc.). Your child should know how to access the electrical panel, gas and water shut-off valves. Have a fire extinguisher readily available in the house,

First Aid / Safety Kit

With your child, assemble a fully-stocked first aid kit, (including a flashlight), and store where it can be easily found when needed. Teach them how to handle burns, bites, bleeding, etc.

Phone List / Contacts

A phone list should be beside each phone in the house. Your child should have a neighbor to contact in case of emergencies.

Other Tips

Leave a radio on, it's a comfort to come home to. Keep poisons out of reach. Teach your children to recognize the hazard symbols.
