Samuel Greer (1843-1925) was originally from Ireland. He apparently left Ireland in the early 1860s for the United States where he served in the American Civil War. Biographical data is sketchy but suggests that he may have left the United States to return to Ireland where, in 1866, he was married. In 1867, he left Ireland with his wife, traveling by way of Cape Horn, to Victoria. His ultimate destination was Barkerville, the major gold producing area in British Columbia. He met with indifferent success before moving to Chilliwack before1870. He first worked on Jonathan Reece's farm. He moved to Vancouver in 1885, attracted by rumors that the Canadian Pacific Railway was about to build a terminus somewhere around English Bay. His was involved in a land dispute with the Canadian Pacific Railway at Kitsilano Point, a dispute that led to a shooting and his imprisonment.
