The chest standing upright is what was called a 'barrack box' belonging to a MacQuarrie of Summerside. During the war, every soldier was issued this style of box, and all of his worldly possessions had to fit into it. It was laid at the foot of the bed, or during inspection, on top of the carefully-tucked sheets. To the left on top of the box is a Canadian army field telephone from World War II. To the right is an artillery shell casing which a soldier converted into a cigar ashtray, putting a more pleasant spin on its ability to make things go 'up in smoke.'
