The Extension Department that was established by St. Francis Xavier University in 1928, continues to this day. As then, today it continues to find solutions to the problems of the present.

The Extension Department of today is still committed to bringing the 'university to the people'. It offers a variety of educational programs through Continuing Education. It offers credit and non-credit courses to the people in the area, and to those who live elsewhere. For example, Continuing Education offers a Diploma in Adult Education, and other adult learning programs, to people across Canada. The Extension Department has a staff of field workers who travel throughout the Maritimes to provide courses in community-based development and leadership for labour leaders and fishers and a wide range of services to community groups including co-operatives and credit unions.

It now approaches the twenty-first century with its belief in the dignity of people intact and committed to the necessity of building a democratic economy and society which reflects that dignity.
