The coal mining industry played a significant role in the development of the social structure on Cape Breton Island. It was the main reason for a large influx of immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The coal mining industry not only had an effect on the people but also the environment, and the effects are still felt today. Coal mining has undoubtedly been one of the major forces responsible for the present day cultural flavour of Cape Breton.
