Regional Impact

The coal mining industry did much to change the face of the Cape Breton region. It was the main reason for a large influx of immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The conditions that arose because of coal mining affected both the people and the environment, and the effects are still felt today. Coal mining has undoubtedly been one of the major forces responsible for the present day cultural flavour of Cape Breton.
