Bastian, Gordon LoveGeorge Cross Recipient |
Bastian, Gordon Love (1902-). Born on 30 March 1943 in Barry, Wales, Bastien immigrated to Canada in 1927. While serving with the British Merchant Navy in 1943, Bastian's ship was torpedoed. When the engine room sustained severe damage, Bastian immediately shut down the engines. Remembering that tow firemen were on watch in the stokehold, at very great risk to his own life, Second Engineer Officer Bastian rescued both men and dragged them to safety. For his bravery and strength he was awarded the Albert Medal, later converted to the George Cross.
