Bazalgette, Ian Willoughby (1918-1944). Born in Calgary, Alberta, on October 19th, 1919, Bazalgette joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941. Bazalgette's Lancaster came under heavy anti-aircraft fire on August 4th, 1944 at Trossy St-Maxim, France. Despite the fact that his bomber was on fire, master bomber Bazalgette continued onward and successfully managed to land the blazing bomber but perished when it exploded after landing. He was awarded the Victorian Cross posthumously. |
