Charles Comfort

Charles Comfort (1900-1994) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and moved to Winnipeg in 1912. In 1939, while on staff at the University of Toronto, he was a cadet officer with the University Officers Training Corps. In 1943 he was appointed Senior Official War Artist. Once overseas, he was sent to England, Italy, Germany and northwestern Europe. In 1946 he returned to his job in the Department of Art and Archaeology at the University of Toronto. In 1958 Mount Allison University awarded him an Honourary Doctor of Laws. From 1960 to 1965 he was Director of the National Gallery of Canada. Following his retirement, Charles Comfort continued to put brush to canvas.
