Clarke, Lionel Beaumaurice (1892-1916). A corporal in the 2nd Batallion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, "Leo" Clarke was born in Waterdown, Ontario. Clarke won his Victoria Cross near Pozieres, France, on September 9, 1916, during the battle of the Somme. When the enemy couter-attacked his unit he single-handedly killed eighteen Germans. Although wounded and bleeding profusely, Clarke remained at his post until ordered to the dressing station. Although Clarke returned to his platoon on the following day, he died of his wounds on October 19, 1916. |
