Dinesen, Thomas (1892-1978). Born in Rungsted, Denmark on August 9, 1892, Dinesen tried to enlist in the British, French, and American armies. All three refused him entry. Finally he was accepted by the Canadian army and served with the 42nd Battalion. At Parvillers, during the Battle of Amiens, Private Dinesen repeatedly led his company on bayonet charges against the enemy. In addition, he single-handedly silenced several machine guns, destroyed enemy posts, and killed twelve enemy soldiers. For his efforts on August 12, 1918, during the Battle of Amiens, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. |
