Milton Fowler Gregg
spacerGregg, Milton Fowler (1892-1978). Born in Mountain Dale, New Brunswick, Gregg was a teacher, university chancellor, cabinet minister, and diplomat. At the age of eighteen Gregg joined the 8th New Brunswick Hussars militia regiment. Four years later, during the outbreak of war, Gregg enlisted in the 13th Canadian Infantry Battalion and was later transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment in France. On September 28, 1918, in the face of heavy shelling, he led an attack against the Germans that forced the surrender of three officers and forty-five men. When the Germans counter-attacked a wounded Lieutenant Gregg reorganized his troops and led his men into battle. He personally captured twelve machine guns, killed or wounded eleven of the enemy and captured an additional twenty-five. His Victoria Cross was awarded for bravery during operations near Cambrai on September 27th--October 1, 1918.
