Victoria Cross Recipient

Victoria Cross
spacer Hall, Frederick William (1885-1915). Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, Hall served with the 8th Battalion (90th Winnipeg Rifles), Canadian Expeditionary Force. On April 24, 1915, at the battle of St. Julien near Ypres, Belgium, Hall and two others attempted to rescue a wounded soldier. In the face of enemy fire, both Payne and Rogerson were wounded. After assisting them back to the trench, Hall made a second rescue attempt. Upon reaching him, Hall positioned himself beneath the wounded man's body and began to retreat to the trench. While lifting his head to check his location, Hall was shot in the head. His Victoria Cross was awarded posthumously.
