Merrit, Charles Cecil Ingersoll (1908-). Born in Vancouver, "Cec" Merrit graduated from the Royal Military College, became a lawyer, and was an officer with the Seaforth Highlanders prior to World War Two. A Lieutenant-Colonel with the South Saskatchewan Regiment in 1942, Merrit took part in the Dieppe raid on August 19th, 1942. Despite serious wounds, Merrit led his men across a 200 foot long bridge spanning the Scie River. Subsequently, Merrit launched an attack on the enemy. Six hours after it all began, eighty-one members of the regiment were killed and Merrit was captured. |
