Mynarski, Andrew Charles (1916-1944). A mid-upper gunner of a Lancaster aircraft, Winnipeg-born Mynarski served with the Royal Canadian Air Force and was assigned to attack a target at Cambrai, France. During the raid, on the night of June 12th, 1944, his fighter was attacked and caught fire, While trying to rescue the trapped gunner, Mynarski's clothing and parachute caught fire. Unable to free the gunner, Mynarski eventually jumped from the aircraft. Miraculously, the rear gunner survived the crash. Regrettably, Mynarski died from his burns. He was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously. |
