Peters, Frederick Thorton

Victoria Cross Recipient

Victoria Cross
spacerPeters, Frederick Thorton (1889-1943). A native of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Captain Peters served with the Royal Navy during both World War I and World War II. Assigned to lead the Coast Guard cutter Walney into the boon defences at Oran Harbour, North Africa, Peters successfully broke through the boon at 3:10 am on the morning of November 8th, 1943. However, blinded in one eye, Peters was the only man on the bridge to survive. Five days after the battle at Oran, while en route to England for presentation of the Victoria Cross, Peter's plane crashed into the sea off Gibraltar. The award was later sent to his family.
