The unequivocal anti-war sentiments which are accepted so widely in Western countries today sometimes make it difficult for the modern person to comprehend the ardour with which men of both sides marched off to battle in 1914. The wisdom of hindsight makes their intensity of feeling seem almost strange or pointless. Yet the fact is that patriotic spirit on both sides then was so high that millions of men eagerly volunteered for the chance to fight for their country. This was particularly so in the British and Commonwealth forces, whose countries did not have conscription as did those on the Continent.
