Biography:
I am practicing an art form that is thousands
of years old. The traditional livelihood of my people is based on trading,
in this sense I am utilizing my ancestors etchings in a contemporary setting.
I was born in the Yukon Territory to Norman (Tlingot First Nation0 and
Katherine Henry (Vun-Tut Gwich'in first Nation).

used materials from their
surroundings
such as caribou, moose, buffalo and smaller animal
hide(s), teeth, hair, quills and bones. Other items used were cloth, glass
and metals which were obtained through trade with Europeans.
As in the past, materials used in the construction
of these articles are all authentic. Ideas for the design are derived from
personal as well as coll- ective vision and culture, and are true to the
traditions of our ancestors. The most common design is the circle and the
four directions. These repres- ent, among other things, the cycle of life,
the seasons, as well as Mother Earth. The colors - white, yellow, red,
black - are the colors of humanity as well as the four directions and all
they encompass.
You will be wearing something artistic as well
as traditional. In our ever- changing world, it is good to know that people
respect the animals enough to not discard or minimize their use but to
celebrate them by adorning oursel- ves with their beauty. |
