Living with a Farming family in
the 1930'sThe Father:
He would have to wake up early, around 5:00 a.m. At 5:30 a.m., he would start
milking the cows. Once the milking was completed, it was time to feed all the animals and
to clean out the barn where the calves and cows were kept. By 8:00 a.m., he was
finally able to sit down and eat breakfast. After breakfast, when all the animals
were safe and had been fed, it was very likely that the man of the house would spend the
rest of his day in the fields, tending his crops.
The Mother:
The woman of the house also got up very early. By 5:30 a.m., she also would have
been out in the barn helping to milk the cows and feed the animals. Once this was
done, she returned to the house to wake and dress the children and to prepare breakfast.
The rest of her day, consisted of looking after the garden, making and mending clothes and
preparing the meals. In the evening, she usually worked as the accountant for the farm,
doing book-keeping, banking and letter writing.
The Children:
The children of the family would often help out the family with the farm. After
school, children had many chores to complete. In many cases, once a young man
reached a certain age he would quit school to help his family with the farm.
