Trying to Survive the Depression:

Daily food recommendations for a girl and boy of 13 years old:

Boy:

Breakfast - apple, oatmeal porridge, sugar, glass of milk, whole-wheat bread with butter.

Dinner - 2 ounces of meat, potatoes, vegetable, bread and butter, rice pudding, milk.

Supper - shredded wheat with milk and sugar, milk, whole-wheat muffin with syrup.

Girl:

Breakfast - orange, shredded wheat, toast and butter, cocoa.

Dinner - poached egg, baked potato, tomato, bread with butter, peaches, milk.

Supper - tomato soup, bread and butter, baked apple, plain cake, milk.

This would have been a very difficult menu to maintain in the 1930s and through the depression, especially if you had a household with lots of children and little money.

Price list of Basic food items in 1930s:

Coffee  -  35 cents a pound

Bread  -  10 cents

Tomatoes  -  11 cents a can

Short rib roast  -  25 cents a pound

Lamb  -  19 cents a pound

Honey  -  69 cents for a 5 pound can

Oranges  -  35 cents a dozen

Milk  -  12 cents a quart

Bacon  -  29 cents a pound

Cod Liver Oil  -  90 cents a gallon

The prices don't seem expensive to us now, however when you had very little money in the first place it would have been difficult to get all the food needed for a healthy family.
