Life of a Fire Fighter:
In the early 1900s, fire
fighting was much different than it is now. They didn't have high powered hoses that could
blast a roaring fire with gallons and gallons of water per second. They had to manually
pump the water from the tank that was on the truck because there were no fire hydrants. Up
until the late 1920s, all the fire trucks were pulled by horses. The first motorized fire
engine was a very big deal to the fire fighters because they didn't have to keep the
horses in the station anymore and they could easily travel on paved and gravel roads at a
good pace. The fire fighters could also carry more equipment and didn't have to worry
about the physical state of the horses because if the horses were tired then the fire
fighters couldn't get to the fire as quickly.
There were no women fire
fighters because society portrayed fire fighting to be a man's job because of the dangers
involved and the brute strength required to do the job well. This has all changed. Now
there are women fire fighters everywhere and they do the job just as well, if not better
then men. The same is true
today as it was back then, that firefighters worked very hard to save the lives of people
in our communities. Without them many more tragedies would have occurred. |
