Sleigh Hearse:
This hearse was built in circa 1820
and used by F.H. Tanner & Sons. They were the funeral directors in Vars, Ontario. This
hearse was used to transport coffins during the winter. The runners on the bottom are
specially designed for snow and ice. This particular sleigh was pulled by Clydesdale
horses because they are big and strong. A hearse such as this one which is very finely
crafted with beautiful curved glass, would have only been used by those who were rich
enough to be buried in style! |
