Dairy farming is not just a single job, but a
combinations of jobs. It was not very common that a farmer would have simply run a dairy
farm. To keep the farm up and running, the farmer had to
look after his crops, make sure all his livestock were in good health, and be a good
businessman when trying to get the best price for his stock. Farmers of the time may
not have had a good formal education, but they would have possessed a wealth of knowledge,
picked up from past generations. The sharing of ideas, equipment, and manpower would have been
a big part of traditional farming. When there was a big job to be done, there
were always people there to help. Farmers would organize a group of men to help with
the harvest, or to raise the frame and rafters of a new building. After a successful
and bountiful harvest the farmers would all gather together and have a huge party to
celebrate. A community such as Cumberland would have been quite a close knit community! |
