Station
Master's Room: The station master led a very tiring life. He would have had to work an eight hour shift each day. His life was also stressful and challenging. He had to know everything about the railway and how things were done. The station master had the jobs of checking and loading luggage, ticket collection and delivering messages to the conductors. His office contained a telegraph, a typewriter, a furnace and later on, a telephone . He delivered messages to the conductors by way of message carriers made out of wood. As the train passed, the conductor would stick his arm out of the train window and through the hoop part of the message carrier to receive the message. Then the conductor threw the message carrier back on to the track. The station master was the most important person in the station, and it could not have been run without him. |
