A long line with hooks at intervals, the line is either floating or sunk and anchored on the bottom. The longline is set through a chute over the stern. A tub filled with line and baited hooks is placed under the chute and set. The line from the next tub is tied to the first line and set in turn, then the third tub and so on until the set is complete. The line is hauled on board by a vertical winch. The fish is then sorted and dressed, the hooks are rebaited and set again. Much has been done to improve this type of fishing. Mechanized and automated handling of the hooks, lines and baiting eliminates the back-breaking labour and sore hands of the old manual method. Longlining is very productive in areas where trawlers can’t fish and where the fish are too scattered for trawling.
